This website will shut down on 31 December 2021!

Bring a wig, a light and your mobile phone!

You are invited to participate in a small performance – or social choreography – as part of the opening of the HER exhibition on 17 November @ 17:00 (or you are invited to pass this message on to someone who might be interested)

The HER exhibition is a video installation touring Sweden in a large truck which will be set up in Malmo for 2 weeks. It is by South African artist Candice Breitz and explores questions of women’s identity using 28 Meryl Streep characters. Our goal is to have 28 women participate in a 10 minute ‘performance’ (or movement intervention) as part of the opening.

You don’t have to be a dancer or actor!

Where and When
The installation will be set up outside in the Dockplatsen, Västra Hamnen. The opening is at 17:00 on 17 Nov and we would like the Meryls to meet at MEDEA by 15:30-16:00 (Östra Varvsgatan 11 A, Malmö).

What you need to bring:
– A wig of any colour (or a hat or a bright scarf and/or sunglasses)
– A light (like a white bicycle light or small torch/flash light)
– Your mobile phone, or a camera, or simply a photograph. The mobiles should have something meaningful to you on them like a photo, a small video clip, or even a little bit of the HER exhibition downloaded onto it.

If you have extra wigs and don’t mind lending them, please bring them along too

Don’t worry if you don’t have a wig: a hat, bright scarf or sunglasses will be fine. We are attempting to be ‘in disguise’ or to play a little with the idea of identity. We will attach the lights to our bodies (neck, wrist, etc) so they will provide a bit of illumination.

It will be cold outside so dress warmly!

What we will do
We will simply join the crowd waiting for the exhibition to open, and at 17:00 we will move through the crowd for approximately 10 minutes showing people the images on our phones. It is not necessary to speak but you can if you feel like it. It is about sharing a little bit of a personal story or narrative. It can be your story or it can be fictional, showing that identities are personal but they are constructed too.

If you would like to attend or have any questions please contact me (Susan Kozel susankozel@gmail.com, or 0727 445 971).

Please pass this message on to others!
