Today, people are creatively adopting and developing new practices and ways of communicating and cooperating with and through video, as can be observed with popular online video sharing platforms such as YouTube and Vimeo. Video remix and mashup have in particular become a way to engage and take part in discussions in our society, with interests varying from politics to aesthetics and self-expression.
Medea invites you to a seminar where we address the possibilities and challenges of open culture production. These activities in which audiovisual media is used and re-used often affect copyright and IP of established producers and content providers. It is therefore essential to understand how legal re-use of media content could be facilitated and supported by various stakeholders in the media landscape, and how practitioners could adopt the principles of open culture production.
Time: Nov 22 at 1500-1800.
Place: MEDEA, Ö Varvsg. 11A (here’s a map)
For whom: The seminar is directed to people and organizations that are interested to learn about open licenses and open content, and who would like to learn how to re-use open content in their own productions and projects.
How: Maximum 15 participants (first come first served). The event is for free. No experience required. The workshop will be held in English.
The Open Culture Seminar at MEDEA aims to address the possibilities and challenges of open culture production from three perspectives:
First, the seminar presents the concept and phenomena of open culture through contemporary literature and examples.
In the second part we aim to share knowledge about open tools and open licenses (e.g. Creative Commons) and provide some best practices and tips how to use licenses in practice. In addition we will have more general discussion about the intellectual property issues and challenges that practitioners may face when utilizing ‘open content’.
Finally, the seminar introduces some repositories of open content online and assists the participants to find media for their particular needs.
Medea Insight Series
This is the second seminar/workshop in the new series of Medea Insight. This is an opportunity for a smaller group of participants to gain insight into Medea researcher’s projects and research areas related to collaborative (new) media. The series is to some extent built on exploratory and hands-on related work, so that you as a participant will have a chance to learn and explore these areas. Two additional Medea Insight workshops will be held during the autumn: Engaging Interactions and Skapande utifrån plats, mobilitet, interaktivitet och nya medier.
The seminar is hosted by Sanna Marttila. Sanna is a designer and researcher for digital design and media. Currently she is a visiting researcher at MEDEA and you can read more about her here.
